和前一年抒情歌、慢板曲充斥的情形比較，1998年節奏藍調與靈魂樂稍有新意、活力，尤其下列名單前十首單曲最為突顯，如：艾莉亞（Aaliyah）的〈Are You That Somebody?〉至今聽起來仍不褪流行；莫妮法（Monifah）、菲絲依凡絲（Faith Evans）各自從經典舞曲取材的〈Touch It〉（Laid Back〈White House〉）及〈Love Like This〉（Chic〈Chic Cheer〉），甚至莫妮卡（Monica）的〈The First Night〉（Diana Ross〈Love Hangover〉）皆具相當水準。
另外，同時融合新舊元素的作品本身質感出色，排行榜成績卻不甚亮眼，由拉斐爾沙狄克 （Raphael Saadiq）替獨腳戲合唱團（Solo）操刀的〈Touch Me〉、狄安吉羅（D'Angelo）攜手DJ Premier共造之〈Devil's Pie〉，銷售數字都不太理想。其它來自蜜西艾略特（Missy Elliott）、提姆巴蘭（Timbaland）、勞凱利（R. Kelly）、JD（Jermaine Dupri）、Darkchild（Rodney Jerkins）、Static Major、Dallas Austin、Tim & Bob、Jam & Lewis與Kay Gee的創作則遍行天下、滿地開花。
